Today's Asshole: How to Rain On A Gay Pride Parade

Congrats to the delightful Steven Zeitchik of the Hollywood Reporter for winning the second ever Today's Asshole award! Steven wins for posting an inflammatory article about the marketing campaign for the upcoming Focus Features film Milk. The article, which is titled "Sean Penn's new gay drama avoiding publicity" suggests that Focus Features is hiding Milk because it's too gay and politically charged for mainstream film goers. This infers a whole slew of unwarranted negative things about both the film and Focus Features itself.

The article pissed me off for several reasons:
A: I used to work for Focus
B: I currently work for the company responsible for the online marketing of Milk (and all other Focus releases) and we've been working our asses off
C: I attended a screening of Milk a couple weeks ago and the film was AMAZING.

I definitely don't think that Focus is hiding the Milk. We have been promoting it online through
publicity and media since early September. I won't say too much about the film itself because I don't want to ruin it for anybody, but if you know anything about the actual Harvey Milk, you know how it ends. It's a powerful story that is told in such a moving way- I think it's really hard NOT to like, no matter how "main stream" you are.

Anyway- Mr.
Zeitchik's article was circulated by Reuters and ended up all over the world wide web yesterday. This was particularly shitty, because yesterday also happened to be the world premiere of Milk at the Castro Theatre- smack in the middle of Harvey Milk's stomping grounds. The premiere served as a fundraiser for GLBT youth groups. Needless to say, the media frenzy around the Hollywood Reporter article put a bit of a damper on this important, charitable event. Way to go Steve-O!

But it wasn't just me who was mad. James Schamus, the CEO of Focus, was pissed! He issued this letter to the Hollywood reporter late last night:

To the Editor: Slow news day, eh? As the CEO of Focus Features, I read with interest your Oct. 28 front-page article "Politics? Focus won't 'Milk' it," about our marketing of director Gus Van Sant's film about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to major public office in America. The author's thesis is simple: because the film was not, like "Brokeback Mountain," screened at festivals, Focus is somehow hiding the film and is thus avoiding openly presenting its political content. That's a pretty serious charge, especially made by a reporter who did not call us to get his facts, so to speak, straight. First of all, to the charge of "hiding" the film (for which, given its post-production schedule, we have only had finished prints at hand for a couple of weeks - a fact conveniently missed by your reporter), I can only say that I happen to be writing this while on my way to the airport for a flight to San Francisco, where we shall world-premiere the film Oct. 28 at the Castro Theatre, across the street from the storefront where Harvey began his political career. We determined early on that the only appropriate place for the world premiere of "Milk" was San Francisco. The event is a benefit for four LGBT youth groups; our benefit committee is chaired by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, and includes every major LGBT leader in Northern California and virtually every major statewide elected official, including Senator Barbara Boxer, Assemblyman Mark Leno, and Treasurer Jose Cisneros. The premiere is timed to the final week before a crucial election, one which includes an anti-gay state proposition much like the one Harvey Milk vanquished 30 years ago. The after-screening gathering will be held at San Francisco's City Hall, and today has been proclaimed "Focus Features Day" by the Mayor -- who clearly didn't get The Hollywood Reporter in time to understand our underhanded, apolitical approach to marketing the film. Immediately on the heels of the premiere, a series of word-of-mouth screenings will be held over the next few weeks in every major city across the country. We will also be holding premieres of "Milk" in New York, Los Angeles, and Portland. But if a journalist is to write about our marketing campaign, might he consider actually talking about...our marketing campaign? The trailer for "Milk," for example (see it for yourself at www.milkthemovie.com) is, not just in my opinion, probably the most inspiring piece of movie marketing about genuine (as well as out) politics ever created. It has been the most explosively received and appreciated trailer in the history of our company, posted on hundreds of sites, and played and playing in theaters nationwide in front of more than a dozen movies. Following the debut of that trailer way back on September 12, our marketing campaign mobilized an early online media push timed to all four presidential race debates – the mornings after, we had specially commissioned "Milk" ad buys on the political pages of the websites of The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, The Huffington Post, and many more. Our banner ads and 60-second spots were all about the film and what it and Harvey represent. Speaking of which, beyond the trailer, check out the rest of our website; it's already filled with scores of stories from people across the country, linking their own lives to Harvey Milk's transformational politics. I expect that more thorough journalism on our "Milk" campaign will be published in THR soon. James Schamus New York City

Well put James. I hope the premiere went smashingly. And with that, I will leave you with this sexy picture of James Franco from the film. Go see it Nov. 26th!

Today's Asshole

I'm starting a new section on Today's Special called Today's Asshole. Each day (or really, whenever I feel like it) I will write a post about the biggest asshole for that particular day. And so lady's and gents, I present you with the very first Today's Asshole.

I met today's asshole on the subway during this morning's commute. As the doors were slamming shut on the already packed L, a man carrying a giant bunch of balloons as well as a bag filled with balloon animals, made his way onto the train. He pressed the door open with his arm and swung his precious balloons into safety. This was kind of funny, but it started to get very unfunny as his bunch of balloons pressed against my head, rubbing my hair into a static electricity frenzy. I shot the guy an "are you fucking kidding me!?" look, and he tried to maneuver his squeaking rubber spectacle so that it wasn't all up in everyone's business. This of course, was impossible. Just a lot of pointless squeaking and bumping.

At First Ave., I moved out of the way to let the poor bastards entering the train experience the strange delight of being molested in the face by a pack of balloons.

As the culprit was exiting the train, his balloons hit me in the head a few seconds before I was able to snap this shot.

Let the lesson be learned-- if you carry a bunch of balloons into an over-crowded rush hour train, you're pretty much a huge asshole. Kindly refrain from public transportation and take your clown car.
